The Championship That Reopens the Season

No need to be patient: Ligue 2 BKT is back Saturday 8 August 2026 at 20:45, more than two weeks before Ligue 1, whose opening matchday isn't scheduled until the weekend of 22-23 August. The nine Matchday 1 fixtures will all be played simultaneously, as a multiplex on beIN Sports — a format the LFP is also keeping for Matchday 2, brought forward to Friday 14 August at the clubs' request.

The season will run over 34 matchdays, until Saturday 22 May 2027, with no midweek rounds. The winter break will be short: final matchday on 11 December, then straight back to action on the weekend of 2 January 2027.

The format itself remains ruthless. Just two automatic promotion spots. The 4th and 5th-placed teams meet in a first play-off (25 May 2027), the winner faces the 3rd (28 May), and the survivor plays a two-legged play-off against the 16th-placed Ligue 1 side (3 and 6 June). At the bottom, the 16th-placed Ligue 2 club will have to defend its status against the 3rd-placed National side in a two-legged play-off in early June.

An Unusually Stacked Second Division

The 2026-2027 field is one of the strongest in recent years. Nantes and Metz come down from Ligue 1. Reims and Montpellier, relegated a year earlier, are entering their second season in the second tier — with the advantage of a squad now fully accustomed to the division. Saint-Étienne, 3rd last season with 60 points, restart with the frustration of a play-off defeat at Nice as fuel. Together, these five clubs make up the projected leading pack — for just two spots.

The usual Ligue 2 paradox already applies: the biggest budgets are also the ones hit hardest by departures. On the Nantes side, the summer has been marked by sales and refusals to drop down a level, and three weeks before kickoff the club still hadn't secured a centre-forward. Conversely, Reims approach the restart with a completed transfer window and eight new signings on the books — a rare sense of calm at this level. Montpellier and Metz are still fine-tuning their squads.

Behind them, the mid-table regulars — Guingamp, Dunkerque, Annecy, Rodez, Laval, Grenoble, Pau, Clermont, Red Star, Boulogne, Nancy — know that a level Ligue 2 rewards consistency more than reputation. And the two promoted sides, Sochaux and Dijon, arrive carrying the momentum of promotion.

The Headline: Sochaux vs Saint-Étienne at Bonal

For its return to Ligue 2, FC Sochaux-Montbéliard couldn't have dreamt of a better opener: hosting AS Saint-Étienne at the Stade Auguste-Bonal, the only match broadcast on beIN Sports 1. Two historic French football clubs, a stadium expected to be packed, and a promoted side lifted by genuine popular fervour — Sochaux president Clément Calvez talks of being thrown straight "into the deep end".

Two factors to monitor on the pitch: the state of the Bonal turf, damaged by the summer heat and water restrictions, and the situation of the North Stand, currently subject to a closure order which the club has appealed. A dry, slow surface often changes the shape of an opening match: fewer quick transitions, more duels, and statistically fewer goals.
