Bankroll Management: Why It's the Foundation of Every Profitable Bettor
Without serious bankroll management, even the best predictions aren't enough. Here's how to structure your capital to bet for the long haul.

Most bettors who lose money don't lose because they pick bad bets. They lose because they don't know how much to stake. Bankroll management is precisely that discipline: knowing how to manage your betting capital methodically to weather losing streaks and capitalize on winning ones. It's boring. It's essential.
Step 1: Set Your Bankroll
The first rule, and it's non-negotiable: your bankroll must be an amount you can afford to lose entirely. It's not savings, nor an emergency fund. It's capital dedicated exclusively to sports betting, separate from your day-to-day spending.
In practice, we recommend starting with 20 to 50 units. If your standard stake is €10, your starting bankroll should sit between €200 and €500. This buffer mechanically protects you against the inevitable losing streaks without forcing you to top up in a panic.
Step 2: Define Your Unit Size
A unit is your reference stake — the amount you commit on a standard bet. It typically represents 1 to 5% of your total bankroll.
Conservative approach : 1 to 2% per bet — suited to beginners or still-fragile bankrolls
Aggressive approach : 3 to 5% per bet — reserved for experienced bettors with a proven edge
Absolute rule : never exceed 5% on a single bet, no matter how strong your conviction
This framework forces you to size your stakes based on your actual capital, not your emotions of the moment.
Step 3: Choose Your Staking Plan
There are several staking approaches, each with its own advantages:
Flat Betting — you stake the same amount on every bet, regardless of the odds or confidence. It's the simplest and most readable method for analyzing your performance. Recommended for the first 3 months.
Proportional Staking — the stake varies based on the current size of your bankroll. If it grows, your stakes increase automatically; if it shrinks, they go down. This naturally protects your capital.
Kelly Criterion — the stake is calculated based on your perceived edge on a market. It's the most mathematically optimized method, but it demands a precise and reliable estimate of your real probabilities. Reserved for advanced bettors.
Step 4: Track Your Results
A bettor who doesn't track their results is working blind. Build a simple sheet (a Google Sheet will do) and log for every bet: the date, the event, the selection, the odds, the stake, the result and the profit or loss.
Calculate your ROI regularly (Return on Investment = net profit / total staked × 100) and break down your performance by sport, league and bet type. You'll often discover you're profitable on certain markets and losing on others — invaluable information you'd never have without tracking.
Bankroll management doesn't guarantee you'll win. It guarantees you won't go broke along the way.
